EIRE OG CYCLING CLUB

Busy Month for Martin Cadden sponsored Eire Og Team

It has been a busy few weeks for the Martin Cadden sponsored Eire Og racing team. The team have been active at races in Mayo, Galway, Meath and Dublin. Most notable performances were Basil Freeman taking the Veterans classification at the Waller Cup in Bohermeen and Turlough Mooney taking a 2nd and 3rd spot in Drogheda last weekend. Good performances also in recent weeks coming from Michael Devins, Alex Carey, Colm Casey and Daire Mooney. Team coach Padraig Marrey is surely keeping the lads on their toes and they are hoping to be in top form for the Connacht Championships which are to be held in Sligo in June.

In other news team stalwarts Martin O Hara and Tony Mooney were the proud recipients of the Cathaoirleachs award for contribution to sport in the community at the recent Awards ceremony held in County Hall. Tony and Martin have spent the last 40 years promoting and developing cycle racing in Sligo and Connacht and were deserving winners in a category which included many other notable nominees. “Hopefully its not the only prize the team wins this season” joked Eire Og chairman Tony Mooney.

Plans are well advanced for the Tour of Sligo on may 10th with 3 different routes available for all levels of cyclist and the chance to ride the 160km route with Connacht Olympian and 3 times National Champion David O Loughlin. O Loughlin will be using the event as final preparation for the FBD Ras Tailteann which begins the following Sunday. His team the An Post Sean Kelly squad won the event last year with Stephen Gallagher, but due to illness Gallagher is unlikely to be taking part. This will leave O Loughlin as team captain and a chance to add the Ras to his already impressive palmares.

This weekend the lads take a break from their hectic racing schedule and will be completing some long endurance spins on Saturday, Sunday & Monday. All riders are welcome to join the spins and there will be a route to suit all abilities. All spins will be leaving from Markievicz Park at 9am.
