This weekend saw the Martin Cadden Monumental Sculptors sponsored Eire Og Racing Team back in action competing in the Cycleways Cup in Navan. Having worked hard with training camps in Sligo and The Canary Islands the Cadden squad were intent on coming up with some good results. Lining out for the Team were the usual suspects Basil Freeman, Turlough Mooney and Daire Mooney. This trio were bolstered by the return to racing of Colm Casey and newcomer Hugh Moran.
Big props must go out to Hugh Moran riding in his first ever competitive event. Throughout the 60 mile 3rd cat race Hugh was active at the front of the bunch and was heading towards a top 10 place when disaster struck and a crash at the front of the bunch with 500 metres to go brought his hopes to an untimely end. Nevertheless Hugh was pleased with his induction to racing and is eager to make amends over the next few weeks. Colm Casey also took part in the 3rd category race and finished in the top 20.
In the vets race Basil Freeman was unlucky to miss the break with 20 miles to go but finished strongly in the main group to take 16th place. The 1st cat race saw the Mooney boys Turlough and Daire take part. Both riders fell off the pace in the later stages of the race and finished well down the field.
Next week’s racing takes place in Newbridge when the Cadden boys hope to move a step closer to a podium position. Training takes place on Saturday and Sunday mornings at 9 from Markievicz Park.
