Michael Devins of the Martin Cadden sponsored Eire Og Racing Team showed that “there is life in the old dog yet” when he took the honours on stage 3 of The Ballinrobe 3 Day cycle race last weekend. Devins was accompanied in on the 3 stage race by Alex Carey and Dara Mooney.
The first stage took the riders out into the mountains of Connemara with 5 KOM primes including the tough ascents of Maumtrasna and Lough Naphooey. All 3 of the Cadden sponsored boys dug deep on this stage and finished in the lead group with Devins and Mooney both finishing in the top 20 riders. This left the Eire Og Cadden squad equal on time in the stage classification going into the stage 2 time trial. In the TT all 3 riders performed well on the stage with Devins moving up to 15th spot overall and the team holding 5th place out of 20 teams in the general classement.
Stage 3 saw a group of 40 riders slipping off the front of the bunch and going all the way to the finish with a 40 second advantage. Devins and Mooney made it into this group with Devins unleashing a powerful sprint to take the stage ahead of Anthony Testa of West Coast Wheelers. The 40 second advantage gained over the main bunch moved Devins up to 6th overall and Mooney to 15th. With Carey finishing to the fore of the next bunch the Eire Og squad maintained their 5th place in the team classification. All in all a great weekend for the Cadden sponsored squad. With the Connacht Time Trial Championships next weekend Devins must surely be considered one of the favourites.
Training this Thursday at 6.30 from Summerhill and Saturday from Markievicz Park at 9.
