GOAL Cup hill-climb challenge

The GOAL Cup hill-climb challenge will take place this Saturday 1st Otober. The GOAL cup has been organised since the early nineties by Seamus McGowan to raise funds for this great Third World charity organisation. This year the event will incorporate The County Sligo Hill-Climbing Championships 2011.

The event takes place in the form of a hill-climb over a distance of just 4km on Muragh Mountain near Manorhamilton Co Leitrim. Starting at Shanvas crossroads just about 3km the Sligo side of Manorhamilton, riders can sign on from 12 noon on Saturday and the first rider will get off at 12:30pm. The event is open to all riders of all standards and ability.

1st three Junior Ladies : 1st three Junior men : 1st three Senior Men : 1st three Senior Ladies : Age Categories for Ladies and Men : 1st over 40 : 1st over 50 : 1st over 55 : 1st over 60 : 1st over 65 : 1st over 70.

So there should be a category there to suit most cyclists in the locality. Past winners of this event include Colette Hennigan, Alan Kelly and the most famous winner of all is Mark Scanlon who set a course record on this climb when he was just a mere sixteen year-old.

Remember though - the main purpose of this climb is the GOAL charity and cyclists are asked to give a contribution instead of an entry fee when signing on for the event.
