After a long season of racing the Eire Og Cycling Team will be running the annual Traders Cup cycle race on Saturday October 8th at Carraroe, Sligo. Sign on will be from 2.30 with the first riders away at 3.30. The race will be run as a handicap event with riders of equal abilities starting together in order to give everybody a chance to be competitive. All levels of riders will be catered for on the day.
The Traders Cup has been running for over 30 years but has been sidelined the last few seasons because of inclement weather conditions. Some notable riders who have won the race in the past are Mark Scanlon, Mark Foley, Michael Higgins, Gary Rooney, Francie Middleton, Turlough Mooney, Philip Mc Caffrey, Sean Callagy and Alan Egan. The current holder Alex Carey is training hard at the moment and is very confident that he can retain the Cup. Riders looking to foil Careys plans will be Basil Freeman and Time Trial legend Michael Devins. Hugh Moran from Ballintogher is also rumoured to be making a comeback for the event which passes by his own front door in Ballintogher. Prizegiving will be in Connollys Bar in sligo @ 8.30pm.
In other news the Eire Og squad have been training for an attempt on the Mizen to Malin non stop cycling record. The record stands at 16 hours and 6 minutes for the 600km ride. Stay tuned to the club website for more info on this and other cycling news. www.eireogcycling.com
